Ethnicity, Justice, and the People of God

Historically, some in the Church have used scripture to enable structures of injustice. Others have used these same scriptures to resist these damaging systems. Beginning with the conviction that God’s plan has always been for a gathering of diverse peoples to share in the divine story, this course presents two world-class scholars discussing the importance of biblical justice in the public imagination.

This course traces various approaches to ethnicity and justice throughout the Church’s history, including scriptural resources to aid believers in witnessing to injustice and participating in God’s vision to put all things right. We invite you to deepen your understanding of how race, justice, and faith come together in the life of God’s people.

This course is co-taught by Profs. Esau McCaulley and N.T. Wright.

Paul’s First Letter to Corinth: Part One
The Apostle Paul spent 18 months establishing a church in Corinth. After he left, leadership crises, petty arguments, political divisions, and general tensions set in. Questions about how to follow Jesus in a secular culture threatened to fracture the foundation of this fledling church.

Covering chapters 1 to 10 of First Cornithians, this course examines how Paul addressed these issues with tact and practical wisdom. Focusing especially on questions of conscience, the limits of freedom, and the human impulse towards control, this course speaks to many of the issues churches today grapple with on a daily basis.

Paul’s First Letter to Corinth: Part Two
Continuing Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, Part Two covers chapters 11 to 16. We explore Paul’s comments about leadership in ministry, spiritual gifts, and the role of the resurrection hope, all issues with real relevance today. Discover exactly how Paul was able to unite a diverse and often fractured congregation through a message of Christ’s love. By looking closely at the issues the early church faced, and how Paul addressed them, we can find practical wisdom to guide us in living as new, Holy Spirit guided followers of Christ.

Paul’s Second Letter to Corinth
Writing from a distance after a painful visit to Corinth, Paul addresses challenges to his apostleship and ministry with boldness and Godly sincerity. Practical issues of ministry and mission caused times of darkness for Paul, yet out of these struggles came a profound theology of the God who raises the dead. Down the ages, the Church has benefited from the Paul’s ‘theology of weakness’ and his vision of God’s strength and sufficiency through it all. This letter has insights for us to gain concerning everything from the shape of the church as a Messiah-centered family, to the work of God in your own life.
